The deepest, most dramatic chemical peel available — a single treatment that dramatically resurfacing severely sun-damaged skin, deep wrinkles, and acne scars with results that last for years.
There are many types of peels available for different applications and results. We use phenol peels to resurface the deep layers of your skin and stimulate new collagen growth. As we age, we lose the natural collagen that gives our skin its plump, youthful appearance — and a phenol peel is one of the most powerful ways to reverse years of skin damage and aging in a single treatment.
Phenol peels — also called "Hetter peels" — are the deepest, most aggressive type of chemical peel we perform. They penetrate the skin far deeper than AHA peels or TCA peels, addressing serious skin problems such as blotchiness, coarse wrinkles, and acne scars. Deep chemical peels deliver more dramatic results and only require a single treatment — though recovery is more extensive than milder peels.
Phenol peel is an effective treatment for severely sun-damaged skin, coarse wrinkles, acne scars, and precancerous growths. The results can last for years — making it one of the most impactful non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures available at Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery.
We perform phenol peels under carefully monitored conditions, usually in our office. We sedate the patient with local anesthesia to ease the discomfort associated with this treatment. The chemical solution we use also contains an anesthetic that numbs the skin.
A deep chemical peel usually takes one to two hours. Once you are sedated, we apply the chemical solution to your skin. You may feel a mild tingling or burning sensation as we apply the solution. After an appropriate amount of time, we wash your skin with water and apply a soothing ointment to the treated area. We then provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, and you return home to begin your recovery.
Local anesthesia is administered to sedate the patient and minimize discomfort. The chemical solution also contains an anesthetic that further numbs the skin throughout the procedure.
The phenol (carbolic acid) chemical solution is carefully applied to the full face. You may feel a mild tingling or burning sensation during application — 1 to 2 hours total procedure time.
After the appropriate treatment time, the skin is washed with water. A soothing ointment is applied to the treated area to support the initial healing process.
Detailed aftercare instructions are provided. Patients return home to begin the recovery process — at least one week of at-home recovery is advised due to swelling and discomfort.
If a phenol peel is not right for you, Dr. Robinson may recommend a Medium-Deep Chemical Peel, Dermabrasion, or PRP Dermal Needling as an appropriate alternative for your skin type and goals.
Advanced phenol chemical peels are not right for everyone. Either a medium-depth peel or a skin resurfacing option such as dermabrasion may be better-suited for some patients.
Phenol's bleaching effect means it is not suited for dark-skinned patients or patients with freckles — the treatment eliminates freckles and can cause permanent pigmentation changes. A deep chemical peel also cannot be used for "spot treatment" of the face or for improving the appearance of skin on other areas of the body besides the face — it requires treatment of the full face.
Patients with heart conditions face higher risk from deep chemical phenol peels. Deep chemical peels offer dramatic, long-lasting effects as well as possible side effects that require careful consideration by both the physician and patient before proceeding. Always discuss your full medical history with Dr. Robinson first.
Phenol peels use carbolic acid and are only suitable for treating the full face — not spot treatment. Not recommended for dark skin tones or patients with freckles. Patients with heart conditions should discuss additional risks with Dr. Robinson prior to scheduling treatment.
Chemical peels are categorized by depth of penetration. Understanding the differences helps set realistic expectations for results and recovery.
