When to Consider a Chemical Peel

Reveal Smoother, Clearer, More Youthful Skin

If you're bothered by fine facial lines, sun or age spots, acne scars, or uneven skin tone, talk to Dr. Robinson about a chemical peel — one of the least invasive treatments available to rejuvenate your complexion and restore youthful radiance, with dramatic, long-lasting results.

Facial chemical peels use topical solutions that exfoliate the outer layers of dead cells to erase visible imperfections and improve clarity, texture and tone. "Peeling" away these top layers reveals smoother skin and stimulates collagen and elastin, which tighten and tone your face.

Dr. Robinson will examine your skin and recommend a solution — or combination — varying in strength for superficial, medium or deep penetration. The process can take as few as 15 minutes, or closer to an hour for more involved treatments. We welcome patients from Aliso Viejo, Irvine, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo and nearby areas.

Chemical Peel Treatment

Chemical Peel Penetration Depths

Superficial Peel. Gently exfoliates the outermost skin layer with minimal downtime. Ideal for mild texture issues, dullness and light discoloration — often done in a series.

Medium-Depth Peel. Penetrates to the upper dermis for more significant results — treating sun damage, moderate lines and uneven tone. Usually once or twice a year, ~1 week downtime.

Deep Peel. Reaches deeper dermal layers for dramatic improvement of severe wrinkles, deep scars and significant sun damage — the longest recovery and most transformative results.

01About the Treatment

What Is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels involve minimal downtime, though the healing period increases slightly with deeper peels. It's common to experience mild tenderness, flaking or irritation in the days following — easily treated with over-the-counter products. Afterward your skin is more susceptible to sun damage, so you'll be advised to protect your newly emerging skin.

We custom-blend a treatment to give you a healthy, youthful glow and reveal the smooth, blemish-free skin within — selecting the right peel depth and solution combination for your specific concerns.

Chemical peels stimulate the production of collagen and elastin — helping to tighten, tone and rejuvenate your skin from within. Combine with IPL Photofacial or PRP Dermal Needling for enhanced skin renewal.

02TCA Peel

TCA Peel by Dr. Face

TCA (trichloracetic acid) is a nontoxic chemical used for skin peels for the last 20 years. Related to vinegar (acetic acid), TCA applied to the skin causes the top cell layers to dry up and peel off over about one week — exposing a new layer of undamaged skin with smoother texture and even coloration. Some physicians prefer TCA peels for sun damage or melasma, often combined with prescription creams. TCA peels are safe when performed by an experienced practitioner.

Lighter TCA Peel

Usually done in a series of two or three for best results — similar to other light peels using hydroxy acids such as glycolic, salicylic, or a mixture.

Medium-Depth TCA

Usually performed once or twice a year. Requires some downtime — typically about one week — while the peeling is visible and the skin actively renews itself.

What a TCA Peel Can Do

  • Reduces brown spots and age spots
  • Improves texture of leathery, sun-damaged skin
  • Imparts a more natural glow and radiance
  • Improves melasma — tan or dark skin discoloration
  • Treats some types of acne effectively
  • Reduces fine lines and surface irregularities
03How It Works

How Do TCA Peels Work?

TCA peels work by removing a layer of sun-damaged skin. As we progress from medium to deep peels, each layer of skin removed is greater as we increase the strength of the TCA solution. A solution that's too strong increases the risk of complications like uneven pigmentation and scarring — so TCA peels are performed at different depths, from shallow to deep, based on careful assessment of your skin. Our experienced practitioners select the appropriate strength to deliver your desired results safely.

Sun Protection EssentialAfter any peel, skin is more susceptible to UV damage. Daily SPF and protective clothing are mandatory.
Keep Skin HydratedUse gentle, hydrating products to support healing and minimize flaking or irritation.
Avoid Picking or PeelingAllow skin to peel naturally. Interfering can cause scarring or uneven pigmentation.
Series for Best ResultsLighter peels are typically done in a series of 2–3 treatments for the most optimal outcome.

04Treatment Areas

What Areas Can Be Treated With TCA Peels?

TCA peels are versatile — we can treat your face, neck, chest, arms, back and legs, and they're often more economical than laser for larger areas. Note that non-facial areas don't heal as well as facial areas and results are less predictable; expert practitioners never peel more than a small percentage of the body at one time to avoid potential toxicity. A TCA peel can resurface and tighten skin while stimulating collagen growth — though risks are greater unless the physician is very experienced with TCA peels on the body.
